MAKING BEDS THE OLD WAY

This is some homemade beds that one of my younger brothers makes,This is his new work shop,The shop isn't finished but he had to move into it to have one of the beds made for Christmas,I hope you can see them well enough, there are no nails or screws or glue in the making of the beds...But we may have to put screws in to hold the slats on..not sure about that yet... He is no expert at making the beds but I think he does a pretty good job for an amateur..
And I'm sure he will get better as time goes by..The beds are very primitive,I think they are awesome....
He cuts his own trees and just whittles away to make the pieces fit..the first pic is made of sassafras, and the second is made of poplar..he can make them out of about any wood and any size..

These beds haven't been sanded down or varnished yet...
He is making me one for my cabin...I kinda wanted one made from a locust tree but he said that would be way to heavy....so I may go with poplar..Whatever I decide I will treasure it because he made it for me..Hope all had a great Christmas...We did....

Have a good one all....

  1. Those are beautiful! Wow! He needs to sell them. How long does it take him to make one? I like the one not finished.

  2. The beds are very nice as is Andora. One would be perfect for your cabin. I have a handmade chair of the same look with a woven bark seat. My great uncle made it for my mother years ago.
Your brother is very talented and patient!

  5. Wow! - your brother certainly is a craftsman! His beds are absolutely beautiful. I really love the sassafras bed, that is such pretty wood, and I bet it smells wonderful, too.

  6. I just love it! That is the type of bed that I want for my 5 year old boy to have in his room. He just loves the outdoors and that would be perfect for him. Your brother truly is talented!

  7. I too, like the beds. Very crafty. It takes a lot to make them without nails, etc. They have to fit perfect, or they will squeak!
Happy New Year. I just love your photos. You are a great photographer and also a great blog designer, I wish I knew how to make a professional looking blog.

  11. Angela sent me to your blog - she said it was awesome. I can't believe he can make that without any type of nails or glue. Does he do this for a living or a hobby?

    Happy New Year.

  13. Very nice! I used to have an antique rope bed - similar looking but ropes instead of slats across to hold the mattress. The ones your son is making look a little sturdier and less saggy!

  14. Just lovely! I love handmade things, they're much more cherished than store bought...and the fact that your bro gathers the wood, too, is really neat. Have a great 2010 Andora!
